Benjamin Sanchez-Lengeling
Assistant professor at the ChemE department of University of Toronto, PI of of the ChemicalCognition Lab. Previously I worked 5 years at Google Deepmind / Brain.I am a researcher that solves chemical problems leveraging data-driven techniques. I design, build, and evaluate computational tools that enable molecular discoveries, covering small molecules, polymers, chemical mixtures, and proteins. I strive to bring computational predictions into the labby designing experimental validation with collaborators, prioritizing interpretation of ourdiscoveries, and making research clear and approachable.Besides research, I am also passionate about science education and divulgation. I am one of thefounders and organizers of a STEM-education NGO Clubes de Ciencia Mexico and a LatinX-centered AI conference RIIAA.
Abstract (tentative)Generative AI (GenAI) is here to stay. As a specialised case of AI applicability, it has shaken the educational landscape in profound ways. Perhaps to teachers’ chagrin, of the past it is for students to agonise with endless brainstorming of ideas for the creation of essays, music, images and more. Yet, is the trade-off between efficiency, creativity, and learning sufficiently balanced? In this talk, we will critically explore GenAI’s current and potential future impact on education, as well as how we could turn the challenges it presents to the status quo into opportunities for educational advancement.
